We offer each of our trainees a summer bursary of up to £1,000 every summer of their degree to spend on journalism work experience or a journalism project, giving them the unique opportunity to travel and explore the areas of journalism they are passionate about.

School of Journalism trainee Evie James shared how she used her bursary creating a documentary about the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix.

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious and well-known events in motorsport.

As an avid Formula 1 fan, going to the Monaco Grand Prix was a dream that I thought was unrealistic unless I was a celebrity or influencer on a brand trip since this is almost all you see on social media.

With the help of The School of Journalism summer bursary, I was able to make this dream a reality and show what it’s really like for the thousands of fans without thousands to spend on one weekend.

I created a documentary about my experience, breaking down the cost and showing a more average fan experience than what is seen online.

Since I was in the south of France, I also took the opportunity to explore more of the region as this was also something I have always wanted to do.

I went to Antibes, Nice and returned to Monaco after the race to look around the principality when it was less busy.

I also created content for my own social media, primarily TikTok, giving updates on what I was doing.

This was also filmed to add to my documentary and I posted some more travel-related content on social media too.

My plan was to film a lot of b-roll footage while I was in Monaco and at the track, as well as updates andvlogs on what I was doing.

Then I would write up a script and film the main bulk of the documentary when I was home.

Editing the footage together was more difficult than I had initially anticipated but the skills I learned in my mobile journalism module were extremely useful.

I filmed everything on my phone and edited the main video in iMovie before adding some details like music and captions in CapCut.

Overall, I am happy with what I produced and it was received positively by viewers of both the documentary and social media content.

The entire experience was amazing and I am so grateful for the summer bursary for giving me the opportunity to do this.
