Meet The School of Journalism team:
The School of Journalism team has a wealth of experience in the industry, from regional newspapers and local radio, to national papers, magazines, leading online sites and international broadcasters.
James Toney, managing editor
James is the managing editor and board director of Beat Media Group – encompassing News Associates, alongside news and sports agencies Sportsbeat, Storybeat and Kennedy News and Media.
His work appears in news organisations around the world and his reporting – from news to investigations to sport – has taken him to more than 40 countries.
He been highly commended for his journalism by Press Gazette and was recognised for his commitment to the coverage of the Olympics by being named a torchbearer at London 2012.
James started his career on press agencies and national newspapers, securing his first front page aged 19.
He’s a member of the Society of Editors, the British Olympic Association’s media advisory panel and sits on the board of the Sports Journalists’ Association.
He is a regular commentator on news and sports issues on Sky News, BBC Radio and TalkSport. His first book, Inside Track, was published by Bloomsbury. @jtoneysbeat
Graham Moody, course director
Course director Graham has overall responsibility for all undergraduate and postgraduate NCTJ courses at News Associates.
He has worked in local and national newspapers in a variety of roles from news to sport to leisure. He was a senior reporter on the Olympic News Service at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He is also the editor of our in-house Londoner sites. @GrahamMoody
Lucy Dyer, editorial development director
Lucy is our editorial development director with responsibility for securing our trainees – across all postgraduate and undergraduate courses – their pathways into journalism. She heads up our marketing and admissions teams and works alongside Graham Dudman building partnerships in the industry. She is a former editor with a passion for social media and emerging digital platforms. Lucy is a trained first aider and mental health first aider. @lucyedyer
Graham Dudman, journalism training consultant
Graham is our journalism training consultant. He works exclusively for News Associates delivering bespoke newsroom training and mentoring in several national newspaper newsrooms including The Times and The Daily Telegraph. He started his career in local newspapers in Manchester and spent more than 30 years working as a reporter, foreign correspondent, and editor for several national titles including the Daily Mail and Daily Express. Graham spent five years freelancing in Florida and held a number of positions at The Sun including head of news, head of features and managing editor. He also spent several years on the paper’s editing rota. Graham spent many years teaching full time at News Associates delivering the NCTJ essential journalism module and helping to prepare our trainees for their newsroom careers. Graham is a former board member of the Society of Editors, sat on the NCTJ’s accreditation board and was a judge for the national press awards. @GrahamDudman
Alice Walker Gregory, remote course leader
Alice is the course leader for our fully remote part-time 18-month journalism courses. She has responsibility for the day-to-day running of the courses and is the first point of contact for our trainees. She is a very experienced NCTJ journalism tutor and can teach across the whole diploma. Alice also teaches on our bespoke journalism courses. Before moving into journalism training Alice had an illustrious career working at national newspapers. @alicerwalker
Tom Holmes, course leader
Tom is responsible for the day-to-day running of our NCTJ-accredited courses. An experienced sports journalism tutor, he also teaches across the data, video and radio journalism modules. Tom is also the editor of our in-house Londoner sites. He has a background in sports journalism and podcasting. @tom_journo
Angela Catto, shorthand tutor
With decades of experience, Angela Catto is our lead shorthand tutor for all full-time NCTJ courses. She is also a member of the NCTJ’s shorthand board.
Charlie Moloney, law tutor
Charlie teaches media law and court reporting, drawing on his extensive experience as a reporter covering court cases, tribunals, inquests , and investigations for national newspapers. He won the Sky Sports News 120wpm shorthand award 2019-20 and the Oxford University Press media law award 2017-18 for achieving the best exam result that year. Charlie regularly works news desk shifts for the Times, the Guardian, the Mail+ and the Mail on Sunday. @CharlieMoloney
Danielle Desouza, journalism tutor
Danielle specialises in digital journalism and social media, and spent close to five years working at PA Media, the national news agency for the UK and Ireland, covering everything from breaking and humanitarian news to feel-good stories and content creation before becoming a News Associates tutor. She is also an NCTJ ambassador and can be found on X via the account @DesoDani.
Grace Crowley, journalism outreach coordinator
Grace is a recent Philosophy and English Literature graduate from the University of Southampton. Using the skills learnt as editor for Wessex Scene and as a content writer for DIVA magazine, she is responsible for journalism outreach with schools and universities, focusing on building relationships with, and promoting courses to, prospective trainees. @gracecrowleyjourno
Kieran Wellington, journalism tutor
Kieran is an NCTJ-trained journalist who leads the broadcast modules, having worked as a producer on both sport and current affairs radio stations during his journalism career. He previously ran the Love Sport Radio breakfast show and currently works at LBC as a producer on Sunday evenings, so has an up-to-date working knowledge of the broadcast industry. He has a passion for sports broadcasting having completed a sports journalism multimedia diploma with News Associates and co-hosts an LGBTQ+ podcast with his partner, Gays Can Play. @KieranWelly
Kiro Evans, journalism tutor
Kiro is an NCTJ-trained journalist who has worked in news and sport across local and national newspapers. He has a passion for sport – particularly football and Formula One – but his interests also stretch to social issues, current affairs and almost everything else.
Marc Bazeley, journalism tutor
Marc joined as a journalism tutor after five-and-a-half years writing for the Sky Sports website. Prior to that, he spent over a decade in the regional press covering a wide variety of sport at all levels in the East Midlands, Cambridgeshire and Cumbria, and has experience of presenting and producing podcasts.
Phil Wilkinson, journalism tutor
Phil teaches across the syllabus on all of our courses. Having cut his teeth as a news reporter, he spent many years as a sports journalist and sports editor. He has written for various national newspapers, has experience of working in radio and has written five books. He also has a part-time sub-editor role with the Daily Star and Sunday Express. @PWilkinsonWIG
Plamedi Mbungu, editorial development coordinator
Plamedi is a Kingston University journalism graduate and former editor of The River Newspaper. Plamedi specialises in podcasting and social media journalism. Plamedi produces and hosts our ‘How to be a Journalist’ podcast, runs our social media channels and assists with admissions and events. Outside of News Associates, Plamedi is in a band, and runs their social media channels. @plamedimbungu19
