Five first-year School of Journalism trainees have launched their own new podcast, ‘The good, the bad, and the trending’.
Macie Lewis, Evie James, Yumna Iqbal, Heidi Munn and Keiley Rainey release episodes weekly discussing all things pop culture, from fashion to Formula 1.
In the first four episodes of their podcast, they have covered everything from Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’ to outfit analysis’ of the celebrities that donned the Met Gala red carpet.

We spoke to the team about their motivations, misconceptions about podcasting and about the work that goes on behind the scenes.
When asked about why they began their podcast, the group agreed: “It’s because we are all very chatty and love to talk so we wanted to combine doing something we enjoy with gaining journalistic experience.”
We wanted to know what the biggest lesson our trainees have learnt since the start of their podcasting journey.
They said: “Realising the importance of media law and how to approach hate comments.”
All BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism trainees are taught a Media Law module in their first year at The School of Journalism. Click here to find out about the other modules we cover on our course.

When asked what their favourite part of the podcasting process is, they said: “We have fun recording it and having a giggle while talking about the things we enjoy and gaining experience.”
Podcasting is still new to a lot of journalists so there are still a lot of misconceptions about it. On our Multimedia Journalism degree, trainees take an Audio Journalism module, covering live radio and podcasting.
We asked the podcasters what they think the biggest misconception is and they said: “We can’t just sit and talk about whatever we like, we need to prepare and think about what is right to say and what can be deemed as wrong.”
There are lots of challenges when it comes to podcasting, from time management to editing to building up a strong audience. We asked the team what their biggest challenge was.
Yumna said she struggled ‘figuring out how to use the technical equipment’.
‘The good, the bad, and the trending’ is now available on Spotify. Their Instagram and TikTok handles are @goodbadtrending and they regularly post clips of their upcoming episodes.
