Journalists aren’t expected to tell a story just in words, but in pictures, graphics, videos and audio too.
At The School of Journalism we want our trainees to hit the ground running creating content, so every first year undergraduate is given their very own iPad, which quickly becomes their best friend!
We believe it is one of the best tools for early-career journalists and here’s why.
Being a journalist means that you’re constantly on the go. Whether that’s looking for new scoops, travelling to interviews or researching a new trend, it’s important to have everything you need in one place.
First-year trainee Jacob Antigha said: “It allows me to work outside more. I hate bringing my laptop outside to a cafe for example if me and my friends are having a study session but because the iPad is smaller and lighter it means I can work from anywhere, even abroad.”
Every iPad comes with the Voice Memos app. On this, you can record, enhance and edit recordings. It means your iPad can work as your dictaphone and editing device, making it even easier to follow a story lead.
You can film on an iPad, making digital and social media journalism even easier. For example, if you wanted to record, edit and post a TikTok, you could do all that from this one device.
First-year trainee Yumna Iqbal said: “I use the iPad most for studying and making notes as the split screen is really helpful, as well as editing videos on iMovie for the mobile journalism module.”
This small but mighty device is everything a journalist needs wrapped up – a dictaphone, a camera, a computer and a notebook. It makes every journalists life easier!
First-year trainee Macie Lewis said: “My iPad is much lighter than a laptop which makes the journeys to/from university a lot easier due to not having to carry such a heavy bag!”
