Journalism Course Content

Journalism is changing. And The School of Journalism course content is designed to teach its undergraduates to stay ahead of the constantly shifting trends.

We want to know your aspirations, encourage your passion and inspire you to become a journalist from day one. And we’ve designed the course so that every tutor lives and breathes journalism.

We want you to be adaptable in the newsrooms of today – to create stories that can be produced across multimedia platforms. To create stories that set the agenda, but also stories that are shared across social media.

The Journalism Course Content at a glance

You will be the researcher, the writer, the interviewer, the photographer, the cameraman and the presenter. Our aim is to ensure you leave accomplished in all these areas.

In addition to the research and analysis elements of your BA (Hons) journalism degree, you will study the core subjects of the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) curriculum, as well as some elective options. These include journalism ethics, news reporting, shorthand, media law, public affairs, journalism for a digital audience, court reporting, your journalism portfolio, and the option to study the NCTJ sports journalism module.

The NCTJ is the oldest and most established journalism qualification in the UK, and remains the industry standard for those looking to break into the profession. Developing the skills to adapt to the multimedia environment is embedded through every subject.

This course is all about putting what you learn into practice: we will take you to court to put your media law to a test. You will see democracy in action as you cover elections and council meetings, and we’ll inspire you with a range of guest speakers  – from experienced journalists, to News Associates graduates and leading industry figures.

We’ll be with you every step of the way, with a team of dedicated tutors who will support you throughout your journey to become a journalist.
